I think this is the answer to your search. This is one of two recipes
that my mother allowed me to make when I was a child over sixty years ago.

The recipe calls for "sour milk", which is quickly available by adding
some VINEGAR to the regular milk. Here is the recipe:

RED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE

Ingredients:
2/3 cup solid shortening (Crisco or lard)
2 eggs
1 cup white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
2-2/3 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda (level)
4 Tablespoons cocoa (or 2 squares melted Baker's semi-sweet)
2 cups sour milk*
2 teaspoons vanilla

* To make sour milk, put 2 Tablespoons vinegar in milk and set container
in a warm place to sour.

Beat shortening, eggs, sugar, and brown sugar until creamy. Sift flour,
salt, baking soda, and cocoa. Add alternately with sour milk and
vanilla. Bake in three 9-inch round or square pans for 25 to 30 minutes
at 350 degrees. When cool, stack and ice with any icing your family likes.
