[world_famous_recipes] Re: Hillbilly Joke
Dear Cindy,
Your email address (C92555@aol.com) was rejected for some reason so I am replying to you kind note through the public venue of WFR.
I have to confess that I left the Ozarks when I was 17 to take advantage of a college scholarship in the East. Nonetheless, my formative years were there and since my departure took place nearly fifty years ago there have been many changes, not all for the better. When I was growing up, Branson, Mo., was a tiny little town on Lake Taneycomo where one went to rent a boat and buy live bait.
I am a retired clergyman and so I understand the satisfactions of being a "shoulder" --- And the frustrations as well. I commend you for your compassion toward the people to whom you lend your ear and your concern.
As for the diet of us Hillbillies, It was pretty generic Midwest, actually. Lots of home grown fresh vegetables in season as well as a great deal of fish and game: my Dad was the sports editor of the local paper in Springfield and a fanatic fisherman and hunter. Some of my happiest memories are of the times we spent in the outdoors, and the satisfaction of being able to bring home dinner. My father was not interested in hunting deer so, when we hunted, we bagged small game and game fowl exclusively. I never cared much for squirrel but it was a favorite of the rest of the family's. Also, I didn't much care for freshwater fish either, to the horror of my kin, and simply refused to eat it growing up. A trip to New York when I was nine opened up the world of ocean edibles to me and to this day I much prefer a raw oyster to the best-prepared trout.
Thank you so much for writing. I am (and always will be) of the mind that a good laugh is far better for the digestion than a sour look.
Best!
Perry
