Re: [world_famous_recipes] Oldies...Paula

Hi Paula,

I've heard both; "the business of not sitting on cold cement"
and "keep your powder dry".

I don't know if sitting on cold cement could or would have
caused a person to have "the piles" or hemorrhoids, but
if it could have, I should have been loaded. We sat flat
on cold cement for hours at the time playing jacks both
at home and at school. I never had any problems until
after I had my first baby, which can also cause the same
condition.

"Keep your powder dry" probably originated in the times
when men were still using the old-fashioned firearms which
had to be loaded with "wadding, a ball and powder", like
the old muskets. If a man didn't keep his powder dry, the
gun wouldn't fire.

I haven't heard the phrase in a long time, but I suppose
if a man of today would use the phrase, it would be about
the same as "be careful", or "mind your p's and q's"
which is another one I've not heard in a while.

Ladies used to say, "Ah, fudge"...when they were exasperated. That was my
maternal grandmother's only "cuss" word. My other grandmother would say things
like
"dadnabbit", which I suppose was about the same. I grew
up in a time and place when no lady...no female ever cursed. Some men did,
but they certainly didn't do it
around the children or the ladies.

Today, I hear the young teenagers who ride their bikes
by our house..both boys and girls, saying words that still
make my ears burn. By now, I've about heard it all, I'm
sure, but it still doesn't seem natural. I'm told that I'm too
old-fashioned, and maybe I am, but I like the way I am. : ))
So, I'm going to stay this way, probably.

I'm enjoying this subject a lot. Too bad we don't hear
more about our "good old days", because in my estimation,
they really were "The Good Old Days".

Thanks for sharing your bit.
Julia
